Higher Than Normal Water Bill Should be First Indication of a Water Leak

Seeing is believing, right? So, if you can’t see a leak in your home, does that mean it’s not there?

Quite the opposite, actually. In many cases, you won’t directly see the water spewing from the pipes if you have a leak. But just because you won’t see it, doesn’t mean you don’t have one.

There are other ways for you to know if you have a leak somewhere in your home – whether it’s beneath the floor, within the walls, or in plain sight. And these are signs you need to be aware of.

Signs You Have a Water Leak

  1. Did you notice that the amount on your water bill is higher than normal this month? If the rates haven’t gone up, and if your family isn’t using more water than ever before, a high water bill is a good indication you have a leak.
  2. The amount of water your family uses can actually affect whether or not you will have a leak in your home. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that a family of four using more than 12,000 gallons of water per month could be at risk for a leak.
  3. If you have even the slightest thought that you have a leak, it’s a good idea to check your water meter for confirmation. First, turn off all the water in your home and then watch the meter. If it starts to change right away, you probably have a leak that’s moving quickly. If it doesn’t change right away, come back ten minutes later and see what it looks like then. If it moved, even though you didn’t turn any fixtures on, then you have a slow moving leak.
  4. Because you live in a warmer climate, you may be using your irrigation systems fairly frequently. You may not think about the possibility of a leak forming outside, but it can. A sprinkler system with even the tiniest leak could waste over 6,000 gallons of water per month, so don’t rule it out.
  5. A leaking toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water a day, which is costing you far more money than you should be paying. It’s important that you check your toilet for leaks regularly. To do this, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and if the color shows up in your bowl without flushing, you have a leak.
